As of June 3, police were still seeking witnesses and looking for suspects in the shooting death of 10th grader Jeremy Baggett, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The shooting took place last Wednesday evening in the West Side's Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Harrison District police Capt. Roger Bay told reporters that officers found an unresponsive 15-year-old boy after responding to a call about shots fired. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office pronounced him dead on the scene from a gunshot to the head.
The teenage boy was a 10th grade student at Orr Academy High School, according to Chicago Public Schools (CPS) spokeswoman Monique Bond. The shooting took place in front of a grade school in a neighborhood not typically known for acts of violence.
Harrison Area detectives are still investigating but there were no suspects or descriptions as of last Thursday.
Jeremy Baggett was riding his bike with a friend at the time, according to an article in the Chicago Tribune. The friend told police they were riding along West Thomas Ave. at about 9:30 p.m. and suddenly were fired upon; Jeremy Baggett was hit, tried to ride away and then collapsed.
The Tribune article indicated that he received a gunshot to the neck, not the head.
His school is providing grief counseling in the wake of the popular student's death, according to ABC News Chicago. School principal Jaime Poole Jr. told reporters that he was a well-liked and upbeat kid with no known ties to gangs or other violent individuals:
"He is a remarkable kid. You see Jeremy in the cafeteria and outside and in the gym and he was very colorful kid and had a wonderful personality."
