Prosecutors say Kevin Long walked into the Daley Center two weeks ago armed with four knives, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Prior to the incident, Mr. Long was convicted and sentenced to prison for threatening to kill an opposing civil attorney's 9-year-old daughter.
He was released in November for "meritorious good time" credit he had earned but allegedly remained determined to commit violence.
After his arrest for allegedly bringing weapons to a courthouse, a raid of his house by Cook County sheriff's police and US Marshals yielded a massive weapons cache. The inventory reportedly found by officers was incriminating, to say the least:
1,600 more knives, five handguns, seven law enforcement badges, brass knuckles and names of law enforcement officers with targets sketched by their names.
Mr. Long stands accused of 49 counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and is being held on $350,000 bond. The Sun-Times features a photo of a sneering Mr. Long, along with a photo gallery of his deadly collection (many of them constructed of a glass-filled polymer undetectable by metal detectors).
But he's not new to the criminal justice system and has been arrested 18 times in the past decade.
Charges against him range from entering an otherwise secure judge's chamber to masturbating in public. In fact, it was the daughter of the attorney for the man who called police for the latter charge who was threatened by Mr. Long. He also has been closely monitored by the US Marshal's threat assessment team after allegedly asking female workers at the federal law library to model for him.
The Chicago criminal defense attorney who ends up representing Mr. Long, if he doesn't represent himself, will have a challenging case for sure.
Mr. Yost told reporters that his complaints about being harassed by Mr. Long fell on deaf ears:
"He terrorized me. I've been screaming about him for years and nobody wanted to listen."
Perhaps now they will.
