Last August, two female infant skeletons were found wrapped in cloth and stuffed into plastic bags in the trunk of a car roughly one year after it was impounded in Northern Illinois, according to an ABC 7 news report. Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia told reporters more forensic testing is needed to determine cause of death, according to the article.
The car is registered to 28-year-old Katie Stockton, who was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Aug. 5 for the death of a newborn girl called Baby Crystal, ABC 7 reports.
An update on the story by WIFR News reports that the other two infants also are Stockton's, based on DNA testing.
The two girls were determined to have been full-term at the time of their deaths, according to reporters.
Although Stockton pleaded not guilty on charges related to Baby Crystal and maintains her innocence, police told reporters they have evidence that proves Stockton is the deceased baby's mother. She was unable to afford an Illinois criminal defense attorney, so lawyers from the Winnebago County Public Defender's office reportedly have been assigned to her case.
Charges have not yet been filed in connection to the two bodies found in the trunk, even though police say DNA evidence proves they are hers. Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers told reporters that the father of one of the babies has been identified. In a televised press conference, Meyers asked the community for leads that may shed more light on the two girls' untimely deaths.
Baby Crystal's remains were found frozen in Dec. 2004 along a road near the home of Stockton's parents.
