In retrospect, 22-year-old Kendra Coffey says her decision to chase after a couple of suspected thieves after they allegedly grabbed her purse was not the best idea (Tribune). Luckily she only suffered minor scratches when she was dragged about a half-block by their car.
She says she was walking in the vicinity of her apartment near the UIC campus, listening to music on headphones, when a man reached out of a car window to take her purse. Most people would just let it go, grateful they weren't physically injured first.
But not Coffey.
Even though the man who grabbed her purse allegedly told her he had a gun, she claims it was a fake and proceeded to chase after the car.
"I was half in half out," she said. "They were dragging me about half a block."
She didn't wrestle away her purse, but the ensuing commotion got the attention of between five and seven witnesses whom the article says gave statements to the police. The suspects (the article didn't say how many) eventually were apprehended and are expected to be charged, but specific charges were not detailed.
Coffey told reporters she was able to recover some debit cards but that her purse remains missing.
Needless to say, police always recommend that would-be mugging victims comply with their demands (if limited to material possessions) in order to avoid harm or worse.
