What Not To Wear... Shortly After You've Stolen It

In the history of half-baked crimes, this one takes the cake: 30-year-old North Side resident Muhammed Lawal was arrested (Sun-Times) two days after police say he stole "an unusual rhinestone-studded jacket" in Uptown.

How'd they find him?

How else? He had the gall to actually wear the unusual, rhinestone-studded jacket in public shortly after taking it. Pure genius!

It's not that big of a deal in the larger context of Chicago crime, but the story's getting plenty of play in local newspapers for entertainment value and Lawal's alleged audacity.

But his display of showmanship was upstaged only by his alleged over-the-top method for taking the jacket. It's just a jacket, right? Well, Lawal apparently wanted it so bad that he grabbed the 21-year-old victim as he was descending the stairwell of his apartment complex, threatened him with a gun and took the jacket (plus a small amount of cash), according to police.

The jacket had "a white angel design on the back, a white cross on each arm and was encrusted with rhinestones in various places, according to police."

Again, here's the kicker: "It was the same jacket he was wearing when he was arrested," police said.

Thankfully the victim was not hurt during the robbery and most likely will get his coveted jacket back. Lawal was charged with aggravated robbery, a felony.
