Alleged Plot To Kill Prosecutor & Federal Agent Backfires

| No TrackBacks

Police say a high stakes gamble by Frank Caira and Jack Mann failed to pay off when the two men were arrested under suspicion of solicitation of murder (Tribune).

Caira had been arrested and charged more than a year ago for using the name of a Northwestern University professor to buy chemicals for the manufacture of the drug ecstasy. He allegedly tried to cover his tracks by asking a friend, Mann, to help find someone to put a hit on a federal prosecutor and a drug agent. Those are very serious felony charges.

The alleged plot was foiled when the gang member (previously convicted of murder) tapped for the murders passed the information on to his Illinois criminal defense attorney, who then called the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The gang member told authorities he wasn't going to do the hit but planned on stealing the two kilograms of cocaine he asked for as a down payment for the job.

He also agreed to help authorities by taping a conversation he had with Mann, who was complaining about Caira:

"Now he's gonna play me for a [expletive]... No, [expletive], my time's worth money. If you want Jack Mann, you're gonna [expletive] pay."

If convicted, Caira and Mann could be sentenced to life in prison.
