It just keeps getting more and more bizarre for Matthew Nolan, brother of film director Christopher Nolan. While his brother's highly acclaimed Batman film "The Dark Knight" elevated his status in Hollywood, Chicago resident Nolan has had repeated brushes with the law related to fraud and even murder.
Nolan's latest foray into the spotlight was his attempt to escape, Batman-style, from Chicago's federal Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he was awaiting extradition to Costa Rica. Prison officials reportedly found a 31-foot bedsheet rope, a homemade harness, a razor and a makeshift key to unlock handcuffs, according to an article by the Chicago Tribune.
As any Chicago criminal defense lawyer would attest, trying to escape from a high-rise maximum security facility tends to only complicates one's legal troubles. But Nolan seems to thrive on a life of mystery and intrigue, not unlike many of his brother's films.
Nolan frequently bragged about being a member of Great Britain's elite special forces and also was investigated for a scam involving promised rides in the Batmobile, featured in "The Dark Knight" and his brother's earlier film "Batman Begins."
While he may have been cleared of charges related to the murder in Costa Rica of Florida resident Robert Cohen in 2005, he is still under suspicion for fraud and attempted blackmail in his alleged efforts to recover money Cohen owed to another businessman. It's a complex and twisted story all in itself, so we won't go into it here.
It's a sad story, especially when you compare Nolan's misadventures to those of his successful brother. But escaping from Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center, which no one has ever done? It's doubtful even Batman could pull that off.
